Growing up in Southern California, I spent a lot of time with a small AM transistor radio glued to my ear, listening to the latest Top 40 hits and the disc jockeys that delivered it. It was a glorious time in radio history – and mine as well. Even as a young kid I was hooked, and knew I wanted to be a DJ.

During high school, I enrolled in drama class thinking it would be a great way for me to hone my extroverted personality into something that would serve me well in radio. About halfway through the semester, the teacher asked us all what we aspired to be “someday.”

I shot up my hand and volunteered, “I wanna be a disc jockey”.
I’ll never forget when he said with a laugh, “Forget it, Dave, you don’t have what it takes to do that.”

A few short years later I would be the number one afternoon-drive air personality on the top-rated station in town. His discouraging words had only served to encourage me to pursue my dream.

I spent the next 20 plus years working at some of the greatest radio stations across Southern California. I was very successful and had the time of my life.

When the industry started to change and stations were being downsized and bought up left and right by big companies, I decided it was time for a change to something more secure and stable to support my growing family.

I completely changed careers and went to work for Costco and worked my way up the ranks. Life was fine, except for the voice inside my head saying, “You need to be doing something creative with your voice!”

So I did. I trained with some of the best voice over coaches in the business. Built a professional broadcast quality home studio with top-of-the-line equipment and had my demos produced by the top demo producers in Los Angeles. It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
